David Margolick - Beyond Glory - First Edition 2005 - SIGNED Photograph of Max Schmeling
A first edition, first printing of Beyond Glory published by Knopf in 2005. A very good book with wear to the foot of the spine - with mounted SIGNED photo of Max Schmeling to the front endpaper. In a very good unclipped wrapper with a little wear to the edges. Max Schmeling and Joe Louis were heavyweight boxers whose two historic fights in 1936 and 1938 symbolised more than just sport. Schmeling, a German, defeated the young American Louis in their first bout, shocking the world. Their 1938 rematch, amid rising Nazi propaganda, saw Louis win decisively in one round, becoming a national hero. Despite the political backdrop, the two men developed a deep, lifelong friendship, showing respect beyond the ring and transcending racial and national divisions.
