He was superintendent of the West Riding Lunatic Asylum, where he advanced scientific study of mental illness. Crichton-Browne collaborated with Charles Darwin, providing research that influenced Darwins work on human emotion. He later became Lord Chancellors Visitor in Lunacy. A prolific writer and lecturer, he helped modernise Victorian approaches to psychiatry and neurological medicine.
